Els Oostema

Els OOstema creates babies. They are so life-like that they are used in commercials as real babies. Many mothers want to hold them. They are made out of a self-hardening clay.
It is strange as it is like she is creating a baby. She makes the baby from scratch just like she would in real - life (obviously one you are not thinking about making- it just naturally happens-birth).
I am not sure whether I see this is an art. Doll making in general is usually made as a craft for children. I guess this is out of that context. AS most dolls - they are made to look real. This one is also made to look real but to me has a difference to it. I say to myself, things that try and differ it from a doll, bbut it comes back as having the same attributes as the doll. for examples - dolls are generally made to play with. I guess this art depends on who the art belongs to and what they do with it. If it is in a gallery, being shown, then i guess it is art. However, many dolls were made to just admire and not play with. Is there a difference to these? Are they art?
I think Oostema is successful with this work as it does question a lot. The answers are not always told and the questions are always asked.
